About the Mission
Keeping Malayalam alive in East Africa
The Malayalam Mission was established in 2009 by the Government of Kerala’s Department of Culture to spread the Malayalam language globally. Sri Ayyappa Seva Samaj is registered as the Zonal office in Africa for this initiative.
The mission aims to develop children’s creative talents, foster a passion for the language, and promote the cultural heritage of Kerala among expatriate Malayalee families in Kenya and beyond. Approximately 70 students are currently enrolled.
Curriculum
A four-stage textbook series leading to a recognised certificate.
Sooryakanthi
Builds reading and writing skills through stories, rhymes, and grammar exercises.
Ambal
A three-year intermediate stage covering Malayalam composition, comprehension, and culture.
Neelakurinji
Final three-year stage. On completion, students receive a certificate equivalent to SSLC Malayalam (Class 10 of India).
Beyond the language curriculum, Sri Ayyappa Seva Samaj promotes South Indian cultural activities — music, dance, and community gatherings — throughout the year.
